The challenge
Closing an energy account should be simple. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Our client received a final bill totalling £132,000 following the end of their energy contract. The figure immediately raised concerns, particularly because it was far higher than expected.
Final bills often rely on a combination of meter readings, estimated usage, and supplier calculations. If any of that information is inaccurate, the total can quickly become inflated. Rather than accepting the amount at face value, our client asked us to investigate whether the bill reflected their actual energy usage.
Our approach
We began by reviewing the supplier’s final account calculations in detail. Our team examined the closing meter readings, compared them with the billing data, and checked whether the supplier had applied the correct information throughout the account closure process.
During that review, we identified issues with the way the final bill had been calculated. The supplier had failed to use an accurate closing meter reading, resulting in significant overcharging. Armed with that evidence, we challenged the bill directly.
We presented our findings, explained why the calculations needed to be corrected, and negotiated with the supplier to achieve a fair outcome. Throughout the matter, we kept our client informed so they understood both the technical issues and the progress being made.
The outcome
Our challenge led to a substantial reduction in the final bill. The supplier revised its calculations and reduced the amount payable from £132,000 to £77,000. That saved our client £55,000.
Just as importantly, the corrected bill gave our client confidence that the account had been closed accurately. Instead of paying charges that were not properly supported, they settled the dispute on the basis of the correct information.
Why it matters
Final energy bills deserve careful attention. It’s easy to assume that the figures supplied by an energy provider are correct, particularly when an account is coming to an end. However, inaccurate meter readings and calculation mistakes can have a large financial impact. And a detailed review often uncovers issues that would otherwise go unnoticed.
This case highlights the importance of checking final account calculations before making payment. Specialist legal advice can identify errors, challenge unsupported charges, and help businesses avoid paying more than they owe. Sometimes, a closer look is all it takes to achieve a very different outcome.
